Advantages of Silica Fume

Stable Properties
Silica fume is a kind of neutral inorganic filler with very stable physical and chemical properties. It does not contain crystalline water, does not participate in the curing reaction, and does not affect the reaction mechanism.

Versatility
Good infiltration for various kinds of resin, good adsorption performance, easy to mix, no agglomeration phenomenon.

Durability
The size distribution of silica fume is reasonable, strong densification, large hardness and wear resistance. It can greatly improve the tensile strength, compressive strength, impact strength and wear resistance of the cured products, and the abrasion resistance can be increased 0.5 – 2.5 times.

Flame Retardant
It can increase the thermal conductivity, change the adhesive viscosity and increase the flame retardancy.

Reduce Expansion Coefficient
The exothermic peak temperature of curing reaction of epoxy resin can be reduced, the linear expansion coefficient of solidified products and the shrinkage rate of solidified products can be reduced, so as to eliminate internal stress and prevent cracking.

Eliminate Precipitation
Due to the fine grain size and reasonable distribution of silica fume, it can effectively reduce and eliminate precipitation and stratification.

Insulation
Pure silicon powder, low content of impurities, stable physical and chemical properties, so that the curing material has good insulation properties and arc resistance.

Anti-Corrosion
The chemical composition of silica fume is silica (SiO2), which belongs to inert material. It doesn't react with most acids or alkaloids. The silicon powder is evenly distributed and covered on the surface of objects. It has strong corrosion resistance and cavitation resistance increased 3-16 times.

Applications of Silica Fume

01/

High Strength Concrete
Silica fume concrete has compressive strength up to 100 MPa, modulus of elasticity higher than 40,000 MPa, flexural strength of 14 MPa at the age of 28 days for airport paving and high early age strength for projects Fast construction and use for precast concrete.

02/

High Performance and Durable Concrete
Corrosion caused by carbonation of the concrete cover occurs more slowly than corrosion caused by chloride. The addition of silica fume to the marine construction concrete reduces the permeability of the concrete will be highly effective against the ingress of chlorine ions.

03/

Sprayed Concrete (Shotcrete)
Silica fume increases the permissible adhesion with larger thicknesses, which significantly reduces rebound strength and achieves greater flexural strength.

04/

Use As Repair Adhesive Mortar
A silica fume used for the repair of damaged concrete structures in marine environments where the need to increase the waterproofing and ingress resistance of chlorine ions.

05/

Used To Seal Oil Wells
Silica fume mortar significantly reduces water permeability, is able to control gas permeability, while increasing durability and compressive strength.

06/

Use as Refractory Material
Refractory materials containing silica fume have higher strength than non-silica fume, especially under high temperatures and with high density. rather, they maintain a smaller porosity and a greater volume stability.

Manufacturing Process of Silica Fume

Micro Silica High Quality For Concrete

Raw Materials

The primary raw materials used in the production of silica fume are quartz, coal, and wood chips. Quartz is a naturally occurring mineral that contains high levels of silicon dioxide (SiO2). Coal and wood chips serve as the reducing agents required for the chemical reaction.

Sio2 Silicon Dioxide Nano Silica

The Furnace

The raw materials are placed in an electric arc furnace, where they are heated to temperatures exceeding 2000°C. The intense heat causes the silicon dioxide in the quartz to react with the carbon from the coal or wood chips, forming silicon metal and carbon dioxide (CO2). As a result, a gas containing silicon monoxide (SiO) is released.

Micro Silica Fume For Concrete For Cement

Collection of Silica Fume

The gas containing SiO is rapidly cooled, causing the SiO to react with oxygen (O2) in the air and form silica fume, which is composed primarily of ultrafine silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles.

FAQ

Q: What are the safety considerations when working with silica fume?

A: When working with silica fume, safety precautions such as wearing respiratory protection, gloves, and protective clothing should be taken to avoid inhalation and skin irritation caused by its fine particles.

Q: What are the main applications of silica fume?

A: Silica fume is widely used in the construction industry to improve the strength and durability of concrete, as well as in refractory materials, sealants, grouts, and as a filler in polymers and composites.

Q: How does silica fume improve concrete performance?

A: Silica fume enhances concrete by filling the micro-voids between cement particles, increasing compressive strength, reducing permeability, improving durability, and providing excellent resistance to chemical attack and abrasion.

Q: What industries use silica fume?

A: Industries such as construction, oil and gas, refractories, and advanced composites utilize silica fume to enhance material properties and ensure performance in demanding applications.

Q: What are the properties of silica fume?

A: Silica fume is characterized by its high silicon dioxide content (over 85%), extremely fine particle size (about 100 times smaller than cement particles), high surface area, and pozzolanic reactivity, which makes it highly effective in enhancing material properties.

Q: What is pozzolanic activity in silica fume?

A: Pozzolanic activity refers to the chemical reaction between silica fume and calcium hydroxide in the presence of water, forming additional calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which improves the strength and durability of concrete.

Q: How is silica fume added to concrete?

A: Silica fume is added to concrete as an admixture, either in dry powder form or as a slurry, and it is typically mixed with cement and aggregates during the batching process.

Q: What are the benefits of using silica fume in high-performance concrete?

A: Silica fume enhances high-performance concrete by significantly increasing compressive and tensile strength, reducing permeability, improving resistance to freeze-thaw cycles, and protecting against aggressive chemicals like chlorides and sulfates.

Q: Is silica fume environmentally friendly?

A: Yes, silica fume is considered environmentally friendly as it is a by-product of the silicon industry, thus reducing waste. Additionally, it helps create more durable and longer-lasting concrete structures, lowering maintenance and replacement needs.

Q: What are the typical proportions of silica fume used in concrete?

A: Silica fume is typically used in concrete at a dosage of 5% to 15% by weight of cement, depending on the desired performance characteristics and specific project requirements.

Q: How is silica fume stored and handled?

A: Silica fume should be stored in dry, moisture-proof silos or sealed bags, and handled with care to prevent dust generation, as its fine particles can pose inhalation risks if safety precautions are not followed.

Q: What is the difference between silica fume and fly ash?

A: Silica fume and fly ash are both supplementary cementitious materials, but silica fume has much finer particles and higher pozzolanic reactivity, making it more effective in enhancing strength and reducing permeability in concrete.

Q: What is the role of silica fume in refractory materials?

A: In refractories, silica fume improves thermal resistance, reduces porosity, and enhances the bonding of refractory components, resulting in materials with better durability and performance under high-temperature conditions.

Q: Can silica fume be used in marine construction?

A: Yes, silica fume is ideal for marine construction as it reduces concrete permeability, enhances resistance to chloride penetration, and protects structures from saltwater corrosion, making it suitable for bridges, piers, and seawalls.
